What are Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities (IDD)?

Intellectual Disabilities

Intellectual disability is a term that refers to brain impairments that result in difficulties with adaptive behaviors such as money management, schedules and routines, and social interactions. Intellectual disability develops before the age of 18 and can be caused by physical conditions like autism or cerebral palsy, as well as nonphysical factors like lack of stimulation and adult attention.

Developmental Disabilities

Developmental disability is a severe, long-term condition that can affect cognitive function and/or physical functioning. These impairments appear before the age of 22 and are expected to be lifelong. Intellectual disability is included within the term "developmental disability," as well as other physical impairments. Some developmental disabilities are solely physical, such as blindness from birth. Others are a combination of physical and intellectual impairments, such as cerebral palsy.
